Warehouse & Process Automation

Make production and logistics processes smarter and better connected.

Warehouse automation starts with insight into flows of goods and processes. QL Digital helps analyse and improve warehouse and production processes, questions around WMS, MES and SCADA, and the connection with ERP.

What I do

From flow of goods to system.

  • Technical project lead
  • Process analysis
  • Improving stock and flows of goods
  • WMS selection
  • Control over the implementation
  • System integration
  • Logistics IT roadmap
  • Alignment with suppliers
  • GS1 labels and tracking batch and serial numbers
  • MES selection and implementation
  • SCADA and OT integration: conveyors, sorting systems, scanners and robots
My role

Technical project lead for warehouse automation.

On warehouse projects I act as technical project lead. I bring process, systems and technology together: from process analysis and requirements, through the choice and integration of WMS and ERP, to alignment with suppliers, testing, implementation and go-live. This keeps the project technically under control and makes sure the solution fits daily warehouse operations.

An important part of this is OT integration: connecting warehouse equipment to WMS and ERP, so that systems and technology work as one.

Production automation

From ERP order to machine: MES & SCADA.

In a factory, the office systems and the shop floor need to work together seamlessly. I help connect the layers between ERP, MES, SCADA and the machines, so that orders, production data and quality data flow back and forth reliably.

MES

Selection and implementation of Manufacturing Execution Systems: order execution, recording production and quality, tracking batch and serial numbers and feedback to ERP.

SCADA

Connecting process control and machine data with MES and ERP: real-time insight into production, faults and performance, and a reliable data source for reporting and traceability.

IT/OT integration

Oversight of how IT and operational technology (OT) work together: architecture, data flows, suppliers and responsibilities, with attention to availability and the security of production.

Traceability

Traceable across the entire supply chain.

A well-organised warehouse is the foundation for traceability. Think of GS1 labels and SSCC codes on logistics units, recording batch and serial numbers in the WMS, and track & trace under EU regulations, as I implemented on a European scale at a tobacco manufacturer. This also lays the foundation for the Digital Product Passport.

Frequently asked questions

Questions and answers.

What is the difference between WMS, MES and SCADA?

A WMS controls the warehouse, an MES the execution of production, and SCADA monitors and controls machines and processes. Together with ERP they form the chain from order to machine.

What is OT integration?

Connecting operational technology, such as conveyors, sorting systems, scanners, robots and machines, to IT systems such as WMS, MES and ERP, so that systems and technology work as one.

Where does warehouse automation start?

With insight into flows of goods and processes, not with the technology. Only once it is clear what needs to happen do you choose the systems and technology that fit.
